Park City Llama Adventures

Llama Walks Minutes from Park City, UT

This is a great family or small group activity.   These are two-hour unguided walks over 60 acres of property.  Small children 2-6 years of age can ride a llama also!  So bring a sack lunch and a cooler of drinks and have the llamas carry the load.  Opportunites are both nights and weekends spring through fall.   $20.00 per llama with a 2-llama minimum.  Campfire additional.

Our Pack String

We use our llamas as packers and as guards for our alpacas. Our first two llamas were Carmello and Buckwheat. Sonny and Roy came next. The four of them have packed in the Wasatch mountans and in the High Uintas. Carmello, Sonny and Roy have achieved Master Pack Llama certification with the Pack Llama Trial Association. Buckwheat is the most docile so he lets children have rides. However, he doesn't have the drive to participate in PLTA trials.

Next in our program came Rusty Elway. Rusty is as tall as any of our llamas at two years old and promises to be a great packer. Time will tell.

We decided we needed some girl llamas to guard our female alpacas, so we contracted some breedings and got Myrtle, Beulah, and Agatha. Myrtle is a Black Thunder daughter and appears as though she will be at least as large as her Mother (a Hector daughter) who is 52" at the withers. Beulah is out of Mocha and Chocolate Girl. Her mother is about 54" at the withers. Aggie's mom, Wendy is about 50" at the withers and she looks very similar to her dad, Kazam.

Masters Pack Trial to Red Castle Lake

Jordan Lake

On the weekend of August 24, 2002, a group of us went to Jordan lake in the Unita's Naturalist Basin.  Stan and Gail Sjol, "The Amazing Dan" and "SuperJudy" Hendrickson and I (Tracy Otterness) all packed in together.  We took 11 Llamas for the 5 of us, so we weren't short of any equipment.   We all had a good hike in to Jordan on Friday, around the lakes on Saturday and treked back out on Sunday.  Another great ULA pack trip!

Packard Lake

On the weekend of August 5, 2004, my friends Kirk Shelayne and Robert Boswell went on a trip with me to Packard Lake.  We caught some 14" Brook trout and had a really nice view of the Duchesne River Gorge.  We saw moose, deer and Dakota (our Rotweiller) kept us "safe".  A very nice 4.5 or so mile hike.  Wyman and Wilder lake are also along the way.  A good easy to intermediate hike with a lot of options.

Red Castle Lake

On the weekend of August 6th and 7th, 2005, I certified my first official Pack Trial for the Pack Llama Trials Association.  Due to varied circumstances, we only ended up with 3 llamas to certify, all in the Masters group.   Carmello, Sonny and Roy all finished their requirements on this trip to be Certified Master Pack Llamas.  They are the only llamas in Utah to have this prestigious title!!! Many thanks to Cliff, Andrea and Sarah Orton (pictured) who volunteered as handlers and turned a very challenging trip into a pleasurable weekend.  We camped below Lower Red Castle Lake with a beautiful view of Red Castle itself (just outside of the fire restriction zone).  Cliff made a great steak dinner and we had a big breakfast of bacon, eggs and fried bisquits the next morning before packing out.  Plenty of great natural obstacles were available within a few feet of the well-marked trail.  As it was over 9 miles from the trailhead, I don't recommend this site for beginners.  For experienced packers though, this is a wonderful location with wide-open meadows and a lot of wildlife.  We saw moose, deer, and alot of other small animals/birds.  Well worth the drive/hike!!
